The House Sparrow is a native of Europe and parts of Asia, though it was widely introduced around the world. Australia was no exception, as the species was released at many sites, especially in Victoria. Sparrows quickly became established in the wild, and their numbers increased enormously until they became pests in town and country alike as they spread into new districts. However, their numbers have begun to decline in some built-up areas in recent years.
